Situated in the heart of Gustaf-Gründgens-Platz, just a few steps from the Kö-Bogen, lies the Düsseldorf Schauspielhaus, a place where architecture, culture and the performing arts come together in a unique way. The iconic theatre building shapes the cityscape just as much as it does the cultural identity of this metropolis on the Rhine.
With around 900 performances per season, the Schauspielhaus is one of the most important theatres in the German-speaking world and is North Rhine-Westphalia's largest drama theatre. Since 1970, it has been delighting its audiences with a wide range of contemporary productions, and today it does so with around 50 actors and other guest artists.
Under the leadership of Artistic Director Wilfried Schulz, the theatre is renowned for successful productions by Robert Wilson (Moby Dick, Dorian, Der Sandmann), Evgeny Titov (Macbeth) and other impressive directors. From the 2026/27 season, Andreas Karlaganis will take over as Artistic Director of the D'haus.
An architectural icon
Architecturally, too, the theatre is a production in its own right. Architect Bernhard Pfau designed a curved, white façade that wraps around the building like an oversized curtain. The building's organic, sculptural form lends the cultural venue an almost living presence, a striking contrast to the clean lines of the surrounding architecture.
Großes and Kleines Haus
Inside, the Großes Haus and the Kleines Haus open up a versatile theatrical landscape which, together, can accommodate over 1,000 audience members and facilitate a multifaceted programme, ranging from impressive reinterpretations of classical works to modern productions, performative formats and discursive events.
The experience is rounded off by the trendy Schillings restaurant, which provides a stylish culinary accompaniment to your theatre visit. Furthermore, the open foyer invites you to linger even when there are no performances, whether for a short break, a coffee, or simply as an inspiring spot right in the heart of the city.
Nestled between the Drei-Scheiben-Haus, Schadowstraße and the Hofgarten, the Düsseldorfer Schauspielhaus serves as a defining cultural venue in the immediate vicinity of the Kö-Bogen, close to Corneliusplatz and in a prime location on Königsallee. As Düsseldorf's premier destination for theatre, this is where international visitors and Düsseldorf locals alike come together to experience the city's artistic and creative side.
